The Daily Story (modeling the writing process)
The daily story is an idea for the modeling of the writing process, spelling and oral language especially for young learners of English. Each day a child has the opportunity to tell a story of their choice. The children tell a story while the teacher acts as a scribe. The teacher asks questions and provides prompts when necessary. Essentially, like the journal writing program, the Daily Story is a free choice topic. This does not mean that you can not dictate the topic. As you can see the children often have similar stories. This is fine for early years English learners as they often feel comfortable building on other children's ideas. In the below example the teacher has used her strongest English speakers in the first days to model speaking to the other children. We also invite a Mystery Guest to visit the class to share their daily story. The children really enjoy this.
